Biography:
Douglas C. Wadle (b. 1977) is a composer of works for traditional acoustic instruments, text, visual arts, movement, and electronic media. His work is rooted in the American experimental tradition and frequently features extended just intonation, experimental notation, and/or manipulated text while drawing on experimental practices in the literary, theatrical, and visual arts. Occasionally, his works turn out not to be musical works at all, but works in one (or some) of these other media. Douglas studied composition with James Tenney and Marc Sabat (MFA, CalArts). He has also has degrees in comparative literature (BA, NYU), ethnomusicology (MA, UCLA), and philosophy (PhD, USC). (Click here for more on his work in philosophy.)
Wadle is a sometime performer (primarily as a trombonist). Notably, he was a founding member of ,, duo and a performer with The Unbuttoned Sleeves, a transdisciplinary improvisational quartet under the direction of post-modern dance pioneer Simone Forti. He frequently collaborates with choreographer Kristen Smiarowski - see, in particular, The Key Game Project.
Wadle's scores are published by Plainsound Music Edition. He co-authored the book Unbuttoned Sleeves (Beyond Baroque Books, 2006) with Simone Forti, Terrence Luke Johnson, and Sarah Swenson. His visual art scores, Amphiboly and Logos prior Logos, are included in the anthology, Notations21 (Mark Batty Publisher, 2009). He is a contributing editor for (The Open Space Magazine). His music has been recorded on Exit Records.
